Stoic Signet Ring Memento Mori Logo Silver
The signet ring is an important piece of jewellery that has had much significance throughout history. The first signet rings date back as far as 3500 BC in ancient Mesopotamia and later in ancient Egypt, where pharaohs and other important people of the day would each have a ring with a unique design that portrayed their power or position.
As history progressed, a man’s signet ring was engraved with the family crest and was used to seal and sign important documents, when pressed onto wax. Because of the significance of signet rings throughout history, we can imagine the likes of Marcus Aurelius, Cato and Seneca having their own – especially with the political positions that they held.
By the Middle Ages, any person of influence had a signet ring. This included all the nobility and they were used to sign all letters and legal documents. In fact, in the fourteenth century King Edward II decreed that all official documents must be signed with the King’s signet ring. Most signet rings were destroyed after their owner’s death to avoid the risk of forgery.
In the modern day, signet rings are much less a symbol of power and political position but instead are worn to remind the wearer of an important message that they can carry with them everywhere that they go. Our Memento Mori Signet Ring is designed to do just that.
Memento Mori is a reminder that there is an expiry date to all of this. We aren’t going to be here forever and neither are those that are closest to us. Remembering this makes us less likely to waste this life that is so precious and so finite. The message is sobering and allows us to constantly reassess what is important and what is unimportant. It is one of Stoicism’s most important and profound teachings.
The signet ring features our unique Memento Mori design. The ‘M’s on the design represent “Memento Mori” whereas the skull and hourglass are well-known symbols associated with the phrase.
The ring is expertly crafted and made of 316L Stainless Steel. The 316L variety is more resistant to corrosion and more durable than its stainless steel counterparts. The ring is water, sweat and heat resistant (no discolouring or tarnishing). The face of the ring is 18mm in diameter and has been polished and coated a coarse silver colour. The individual features of the Memento Mori design are silver and 3D.
Each ring comes presented in a small ring box – ideal as a gift, for presentation purposes or for simply keeping your ring safe and secure when you aren’t wearing it.
